Callus Rippage

Hey,
Does anyone know any preventative techniques to avoid having calluses grow to the point they rip off doing pullups or a similar exercise? It hurts like hell and can prevent me from training for a couple days if they get really bad...Thanks!

Re: Callus Rippage

Most folks file their callouses with a nail file or pedi-egg type file, others just trim them down with nail clippers or scissors.

I know people who just pick at them bit by bit over time. also, dont use a palm grip with your pulls/chins, use a finger grip. if you need more clarification i can link you a video

Re: Callus Rippage

First off, don't work through blisters. Let it heal, do other workouts and live to fight another day. I use a pedi-egg every night. I have better luck when my hands are dry vs just getting out of the shower. Finally, get Cornhuskers Lotion and put that on. It's non-greasy and dries on your hands in a minute. You can get it at Wal-mart for 3 or 4 dollars.

Re: Callus Rippage

I use a generic Dremel rotary tool with a sanding band attachment, medium to fine grit. I know several other gyms that keep one around for clients to use. It's much faster than a pumice stone or emory board.

I find right after a deadlift session is the best time to trim the callouses down. Just grab the Dremel tool, go outside and sand the raised parts down. I only need to do this once every 7-10 days because the tool is so efficient at removing the dead skin. It takes only about a minute, so usually I'll do it between sets.
