I know the Zone is the diet here, but I was wondering if anyone had any menu suggestions for breakfast that are relatively low carb. I try to stay away from breads (except some whole grain) and sugar. I shoot for 4 out of my my 5 meals to be low carb.
On days when I don't make my one carb meal breakfast (like if it's going to be a pizza night w/ the family) I usually have an omelet. Lately, I'm sick of the idea of omelets.. |

Meat and veggies will work.

Yeah, I figure that meat and veggies is a given. I'm a recovering Dunkin Donuts addict. I have visions of bagels every morning. It's tough to get motivated to eat chopped ham and turkey at 7 am.

I usually make oatmeal pancakes, and they're so good! Oats are about the only non-veggie/ non-fruit carb that I eat, but they provide good fuel for my 6:30am workouts.
I'm on the Zone, so for a 2 block pre-workout breakfast I combine 2 egg whites, 1/3 cup of oats, tbsp protein powder, and some cinnamon. Makes 3 small pancakes that cook quickly in a non-stick pan. To get the rest of the carbs use about 1 tbsp of no-sugar added fruit spread (not jam!) and for fat, 1 tsp of peanut butter. Hope this helps. Bon appetite! |

Christine--perhaps try almond butter. Its way healthier and doesnt have those dreaded afloxins (sp?) that peanuts have!

My breakfasts are usually oatmeal or omlettes (or both). A favourite Zone breakfast of mine is soy pancakes:
2/3 c. soy flour 1 c. soy or cow milk 1 egg (include the yolk) Mix well and fry in olive oil. Makes for a 4 block breakfast. |

Jack;
I prefer the Paleo diet, and log my intake via Fitday. End of June, intake looks more like 28%C, 33%P and 39%F, with an average calorie intake of around 1700. I'm always tweaking the ratio, but I would not consider zone at 40 30 30 to be low carb. Zone is popular, but not the end all, be all. What works for you is what works for you. |

Jay, a daily average of 1700 calories? Maybe im way off, but that seems really low.
At 5'7 160ish im not the largest guy, but have had real trouble maintaining performance with such a low intake. Hows your performance at that level? Do you have trouble recovering? Are you trying to lose weight? Not trying to attack you, just curious. |
