Sorry my gymnastics coach side is kicking in. The photo of the leg lift (toes to bar) has technique stuff that I would get on people for. The head should be kept in throughout the motion (eg looking straight forward, not up). This prevents you from cheating with your shoulders and really helps abdominal compression. Flexibility can be an issue to do it properly. Also, legs should be kept totally straight, not just mostly straight :-P.

Coach, I got a nice killer variation on this too. Start in a hanging L, lift toes to the bar, return to hanging L, lift to inverted straddle hang, return to L. That is 1 cycle. 3 cycles will kill most folks. Throughout you are not allowed to drop your legs below horizontal.

Roger,

That lift just about killed me yesterday. My abs are really sore. :-) The changes you suggest sound wicked.

What is an inverted straddle hang?

To get to an inverted straddle hang start hanging, lift your toes till they are near the bar, then straddle and keep turning over. So now you are straddled, your legs are upside down and parallel with the ground, your elboes are touching the inside of your thighs.

Roger,

I tried the leg lift today as you described with my chin in (looking forward) and it relieved the stress in my lower back when doing the movement.

Thanks for the info on the straddle hang, I'll give it a try.
