Rower vs Running

Hi,

I have a CF facility set up but unfortunately the budget ran out before I was able to get a treadmill. I'm located in Canada and running outside isn't always an option due to the snow, so I'm trying to modify the WODs . I do have a C2.

What would be the equivilant to running 400m, 800m, 5k and 10k be on the C2 in order to get the same effect?

Thanks!

James

Re: Rower vs Running

Hey James

I am in a similar situation. I replace the run portion of the WOD with a row on a regular basis.
The distance I use is the same. 1m for 1m. The times are comparable for me, so it works.

Re: Rower vs Running

Have you considered having people skip rope? After all, I don't think rowing is always the best sub for running. Take a workout like this:

As many rounds in 20 mins of:
max pullups
400m run

Rowing will burn you out fast cause your back won't get a break.

James, from the FAQ section:

3.2. How does running compare to rowing, biking, etc.?

To compare the different aerobic exercises, pick a comparable time interval. For example, if you run 400m in 90 seconds, then row or bike or jump rope or run stairs etc. for 90 seconds

Re: Rower vs Running

I'd like to propose an evolution of that sub for those with the motivation to perform it.

First, determine your time on a 400m run.

Then, row for that duration.

Take the distance you rowed and use that DISTANCE for your 400m sub.

This way, you can still get the dynamic of "working harder for faster times" on your WoD. If all you do is use a 90 second sub (or whatever), your row/run will always take the same amount of time, and you have no incentive to go faster or slower.

Thoughts?

Re: Rower vs Running

For the shorter running distances - 400M, 800M and 1 mile I've always substituted 500M, 1K and 2K. Those are all standard ranked distances on the Concept2 site. For the 5K and 10K runs I do a direct sub of 5K and 10K rowing. Those are also ranked distances for the C2. Using ranked distances from C2 allows me to compare my times against the rankings from C2s site.

For a 400m run in NY, we do either a 500m row or have even done 21 burpees!

Re: Rower vs Running

We generally follow Shan's outline 500m/1000m row = 400m/800m run ... 5k/10k = 5k/10.

Travis has a good point that rowing is often a tough sub for running, so we often sub with jumping rope. Then we do as Brandon suggests, how many turns on the rope in, say, 1:30 ... keep that number of turns constant throughout the rounds.
