Tofu Quality

Hi there!

I've begun eating Tofu lately and I've been told that the firm or extra-firm types are better, apparently both these types pack a lot more protein per gram that the other ones.

Unfortunately, here in Buenos Aires there aren't that many Tofu suppliers and I only have access to one brand on a regular basis at the local health shop and I've got nothing to compare it to.

The contents per 100 grams of this type of Tofu are:

Protein 13.7 grams
Carbohydrates 2.8 grams
Fat 9 grams

How does this compare to other firm or extra-firm types of Tofu out there?

Thanks!

Juan Manuel.

For interest's sake, a friend of mine returned from Japan recently and said that the idea of eating tofu more than a day old was like us eating stale bread...

Re: Tofu Quality

Juan Manuel, I don't know what your grocery store looks like, but I'd have to think there are better sources of protein available to you than tofu. When I ate the stuff, I usually went for the firm, as it was easier to handle.

Re: Tofu Quality

Extra-firm tofu *does* have more protein in comparison to other types of tofu.
That said, it's NOT an efficient source of protein at all, and there's plenty of reason to doubt that it's a very good source of protein.
If you're going for soy products, tempeh is better. If you're not a committed vegetarian, man, you're in Buenos Aires! Eat beef!
