single dumbbell press better than barbell press?

I get the impression that at challenging loads, it is easier with the single db press not to arch the back and to maintain proper form than it is with the barbell press.

I would like to know what others think about this.

Thanks!
Luis

Re: single dumbbell press better than barbell press?

This is because during a challenging single-arm dumbbell press, the demand on sagittal plane core stability (esp. anti-extension) is much less than in the barbell press, as you noted. On the other hand, the unilateral loading of dumbbell press challenges lateral and rotary core stability. The barbell press allows for greater loading and overload while the dumbbell press requires greater scapular stability. The real question is... better for what?

What's wrong with arching your back on the bench press?

Re: single dumbbell press better than barbell press?

Eric, I probably should have said excessive arching of the back, which in my case produces discomfort on the lower back.

Re: single dumbbell press better than barbell press?

An even better lift is a double kettlebell press or dumbbell press if you have the appropriate weights available to you. If not, the overhead press with the barbell is fine.

Re: single dumbbell press better than barbell press?

My first response: don't over-arch your back when doing a strict barbell press.

You can just as easily do a one-arm DB press incorrectly...if you have the discipline to do that correctly, you can also do a strict BB press correctly.

Yeah, you may have to drop the weight and re-learn correct form and strengthen some supporting muscles, but in the end it's the right thing to do. I did that with squats, and it was well worth it.
