Re: Shoulder pain prevents me from doing pull ups

Iīm gonna say DONīT do pull ups on rings if you canīt do them on a bar. Rings are a more dynamic pull up and require more shoulder stability to perform. If you want to change your grip to a nuetral grip pull up you could try that, but honestly you should be seeing someone about it.

DO see a specialist Chiro or PT.
DO scale your workouts accordingly.
DO start a program of rehab before you start doing more pullups.

Donīt listen to dumb diagnostic guesses by unqualified people on a forum.

Best,
Dr. J

Unqualified...hahah. So I guess 10+ years of coaching gymnastics means notha. There are basically a FEW people in CF and on this board that are probably as qualified regarding anything gymnastics wise as myself. Pfft.

I did fail to state strict pullups on rings. Forgot default pullups in CF are kipping.

OP was originally talking about deadhang pullups, pronated/supinated, etc.

Re: Shoulder pain prevents me from doing pull ups

Did you have 1 year 10 times or 10 years of experience?
Very basically, a stable bar vs. a ring hanging from webbing that has WAY less stability and requires much more in the way of shoulder stability, strict or kipping the stable bar is first in the progression.
If you consider that most shoulder injuries come from a lack of stabilization due to inappropriate or weak muscle activation and the OP canīt do pullups without pain, even in different positions, then he should start a program to activate shoulder stabilizing muscles after seeing a real person who did a shoulder exam to rule out other pathology.
Its the same thing as putting some weight on the bar when the person canīt do the movement without weight. Telling someone "its definitely rotator cuff, Iīd guess", while a contradictory statement in and of itself, on a public forum with 10 years or 100 years of experience is dumb advice.

Re: Shoulder pain prevents me from doing pull ups

Josh, it's not the stability factor of a straight bar vs rings, it's the pullup path. That path tends to be easier on the shoulder and easier to perform.

Go back to the 1st post. Pronated pullups hurt, supinated hurt way less. 5%. Can do rows.

I generally do and train (as in my gymnasts) ring pullups in a neutral grip though at times the grip will be pronated. It's a little easier on the shoulders.

Check out Kelly starrett re: shoulder mobility

http://youtu.be/q0Elx93duAA

And Carl paoli re:hook grip on bar for pull-ups

http://youtu.be/WYogzb2DHHk

It's all about setting the shoulder in external rotation in the capsule. If you can avoid internal rotation and think about "breaking the bar" or applying some external tension on the arm, starting with the pinky, you might get some relief.

I second the reference to Kelly's videos. I find the Beauty Queen mob: http://www.mobilitywod.com/2012/07/t...-mob-of-death/ to be particularly effective for this. (WFS)

Yeah, because a doctorate ensures that you'll get smart diagnostic guesses.

I get, and agree with, your point, to a degree. But half the answers here told the guy to go to a doctor; the one guy who didn't isn't exactly unqualified, unless you - 'unqualified' with 'isn't a doctor.'

The last time I had shoulder issues I had to fight to see a surgeon; 2 different doctors 'believed' I only had biceps tendinitis.

Suffice to say that wasn't the case, but it was through research and perseverance that I finally got treatment.

Re: Shoulder pain prevents me from doing pull ups

My shoulders gave me a fit when I started 9 months ago, I had prior untreated injuries in both of them. I'm still not good at them, but I have very little pain anymore. I did strict pullups until I built enough shoulder muscle to allow me to kip without hurting.
