Shoulder pain prevents me from doing pull ups

Hi guys,

This is something that's been bothering me for quite a while. Whenever I do a dead hang pull-up, I experience pain in my left shoulder. And this happens strictly only when doing dead hangs. It feels like some sort of ligament in my shoulder grinds on something on the way up. I've tried using different grip width, but it's always the same. The pain disappears if I straighten my hands as much as possible without going to a dead hang

I never have any problem with chin-ups, and I can do quite a few, and I've been doing them regularly. When doing chins from a dead hang I feel maybe 5% of the same pain as I do when doing pull-ups, so it's more of a slight inconvenience. Up until now I've just let it be and I've done regular chin-ups, but I'm joining a crossfit gym in a couple months and I thought I'd try to address the problem now rather than later.

I've previously had problems with my shoulders, ex. problems with the rotator cuff, and doctors said that my shoulder joint doesn't have much room to move as some people do. Otherwise my shoulders are fine right now.

I'm 22 yo, 5'11, 180lbs.

Re: Shoulder pain prevents me from doing pull ups

Hey Markus. Pre-existing shoulder injuries are tough to work with. I can understand your frustration. My suggestion would be to seek out medical professionals who can help you understand the limitations and prognosis of your shoulder issue. If you can understand what you're capable of doing at this time, you can work to scale your WODs around your abilities so that you're training safely.

Re: Shoulder pain prevents me from doing pull ups

Thanks for the reply. I'm not sure you could call it an existing injury, as nothing ever broke or anything, iirc just an inflammation of the rotator cuff. I was wondering if anyone had a similar issue when doing pull-ups, and if they found a fix.

You're probably right though about talking to a professional about it.

Re: Shoulder pain prevents me from doing pull ups

Are you using proper pullup form? You're supposed to squeeze your shoulder blades together and keep them squeezed at the bottom.

Hopefully the crossfit gym will correct your form if you don't.

Isn't the definition of dead hang such that you relax your shoulder blades, and once you start going up you squeeze them together, which means you start the pull with your blades, and from there to your lats.

I've tried them on rings, and while it eliminates some of the pain it's still there.

Could you please explain what is "bunch of RC ****"

Yep, definitely RC I'd guess. Rows still use the RC but obviously there is less load and pressure on the RC.

Re: Shoulder pain prevents me from doing pull ups

It could also be something as simple as scar tissue. Post-shoulder surgery doing pullups was still painful as could be.

I finally went to a massage therapist for something unrelated, and she said "Let's try something....humor me." She conducted an hour of Chinese cupping on my shoulders.

I used to think Chinese cupping was like snake oil. Now I'm an avid believer in it; you could actually HEAR the scar tissue 'tearing' away from the good tissue.

Once that was done, the pain was gone within a few hours, and I can now deadhang for minutes at a time and do pullups with no issues.
