Hurt my back while doing squats

Hey guys,

I'm just looking for some advice, because this is the first time I've actually hurt myself while lifting weights. I'm a little spooked by it.

I'm 22, 6'2 and 195; I'm training in GSLP. I took a loooong 9 day break from the gym during the holidays. The day that I went back, I decided to use the same weight I was squatting when I left. So I was squatting 300lbs and the first set of 5 was tough, but then on the last rep of the second set, I felt a pain (maybe a click) in the lower/mid left area of my back.

Now the pain is more of an annoyance, so it's not too bad. I went back to the gym today and did some light stretching and weight work and it felt ok, but the annoying pain is still there. I'm wondering what this may be and if I need to see a doctor/PT for it? Has anyone else had this before?

Thanks for any advice,
Leo

Re: Hurt my back while doing squats

From the limited description of the injury, it sounds like it could be simply an inflamed muscle/tendon/ligament. Does your lower back curve at all in the bottom position? I used to hurt my back a few times every year when going from inactivity to squatting ATG with poor form and a definite butt wink at the bottom. When walking around it felt fine, but with hip flexion or curving my back forward I would feel a sudden twinge of pain at about 3-4/10 on a pain scale with 1 being no pain and 10 being the worst ever. I usually recovered from it in a few weeks without any mobility/rehab work. My suggestion, which should be taken with a grain of salt with my limited medical experience, is to use a reverse hyper to try to loosen things up in your lower back and get some good blood flow. I would also check your form. If you have solid lumbar spine positioning all of the way through your squat, then your hamstrings and glutes should be failing long before you ever hurt your lower back.

This is a recent video of my squat for reps. The pain is probably a 2-3 on the scale. I think I was rusty and should have started my return with a 10% reset... Lesson learned!

Re: Hurt my back while doing squats

Steven,

Thank you for that article! I would say that I might have suffered a muscle strain. My pain does not radiate at all and it located to the left side of my back. It does not feel low enough to be a SI joint issue. The pain at the worst (3/10) when I'm lying down and trying to sleep. Any more information you need?

Leo
