some people refer to it as the maxi pad.

That's the truth. Had a guy come into my work the other day who asked me what he could do for muscle soreness. He said he "hit the Gym" and was sore today. I laughed and said don't go to the gym anymore.

Don't take this the wrong way, but if squatting 255# hurts too much and you need to use a pad, you may as well quit now or toughen the hell up.

I am a MASSIVE fan of this! Back in my globo gym days I fell into the shoulder pad game, but once I left and went 'naked' I instantly felt the difference. Not only is my form and positioning better, but I'm upping my weights too! I think the pad is a disadvatage, when there's something between you and the bar I think you lose contact with it and can't get proper balance, leading to a lot of instability in your squats!

Squatting that without the pad. Haven't used it for a while. When I did stop using it I was doing 10-12 reps with lighter weight, but now just going heavy for 1-2 reps for 7-8 sets.

I do feel better being able to feel the solid bar instead of a bit of foam. Have never really gone heavy doing 1 or 2 RM so have to start somewhere.

I'm 86kg (190#) so I don't think it's to bad a starting point.

Yeah. I have never used a pad and I'm not even sure I'd know how to use one if it was there to use.
That said, now that I squat decent weight, I do notice that after 3 sets of 5 at weights in excess of 315#, if I've worn a thin cotton shirt (like American Apparel) I will have little tears in my skin where the knurling has dug into my skin. It is what it is.
