Re: Something that made me a little nuts at the Games

The NW Regionals required the lifters to "flash" the fingers to show a regrip for the fat bar deadlift for reps event. It was a little difficult to judge, as it turned out. Because speed was of the essence in that event, the lifter I judged marginally met the standard on every single rep. He also barely straightened up sufficiently on every rep. He was definitely gaming the standards for maximum advantage -- and he needed to.

Steel plates.

I think Aushion's "deadlift from a sandpit" is a great idea! Very much in line with the "unknown and unknowable" ethos. I'd like to see more equipment/environment tweaks like that. Some of the events at the Games qualifiers: Burpees in a weighted vest, burpees with a mandated height on the jump, I thought were really fun.

You could keep digging your feet in to make the deadlift shorter.

I would prefer locomotion based wods to have that element.

Deadlifts in the sand sound like it would invite injury.

In strongman contests a lot of the time you go down on the good lift command and can't pull again until given the lift command. They are almost always using steel plates though.

This reminds me of something.

The other day at work, I was in the corn silo and we have a motor in the middle that connects to an auger that rotates around the outside and pulls the corn to the center. Corn, being a large seed, often clogs up the motor so you have to constantly lift up on it to let it sort itself out. The auger itself weighs probably 300 pounds and I was lifting one end of it every 45 seconds for about an hour, knee deep in corn. It sucked. It was more like quicksand than sand... and it sucked.
