Why do people hate Crossfit?

Iv been reading a lot on the forums and boards of other weight training sites and heard comments from other well known strength and conditioning coaches making negative comments about crossfit. Out of all the type of lifters, bodybuilders, powerlifters, olympic lifters, and other sport athletes, it seems to me that one thing they agree on is the dislike for crossfit. Want to hear other peoples opinions on this.

It's the CrossFit website. It's reasonable to assume that we disagree with them.

I dont know why people dislike it. I just started it and I love it so much, maybe they think crossfit is elitist or something like that? I dont know.

Most people fear what they don't understand. Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering. I sense much fear in you.

Re: Why do people hate Crossfit?

Because Crossfit overlaps their domain of expertise, but doesn't follow their conventions/rules. We're the interlopers, and nobody likes it when someone comes into your house and tells you you're doing it all wrong.

Some concepts of Crossfit are revolutionary, some concepts just have different goals, so we do things differently. People have problems reconciling these differences in a friendly way.

<shrug>

I know what my goals are, and Crossfit meets them the best. If my goals were different then I'd be doing something else. People that are ****ed at Crossfit are having problems focusing on their own goals instead of my goals.

Edit: Heh, that's funny - ****ed is filtered just like ****ed is filtered, so you can't tell exactly how crass I am...

Re: Why do people hate Crossfit?

This is a pretty funny topic. My buddy and I started CFing right after arriving in Iraq about 5 months ago. Since then we have dealt with the majority of our company talking smack about Crossfit while having almost no knowledge of what it involves.

Over the past few weeks, more guys in our company have voiced their desire to try a workout or two. We've led them through a couple of workouts and every time at the end, their response is always "Wow I'm never going to talk **** about that stuff again."

I understand you're talking more about fitness experts taking a dislike to Crossfit but I think the reasons are all the same. A lack of understanding of what Crossfit truly embodies.

Because it's tough, and it hurts.

Re: Why do people hate Crossfit?

I think the idea of GENERALIST fitness instead of SPECIALIST fitness is bound to be unsavory to a lot of experts, who make their living training people who can only do one specific range of tasks really well. As far as I've read, Crossfit really does issue a pretty unique challenge: to become good at MOST things, good enough to be competitive alongside specialists but without being a specialist. I can see a lot of experts being really threatened by that, actually. What? You mean my athletes don't have to be unbalanced freaks to be good at their sport? Bah humbug.

Re: Why do people hate Crossfit?

I don't think it has anything to do with "fear" or "lack of knowledge" in regards to strength coaches or olympic lifters. I think it has a little to do with the ego of the crossfit community. Sometimes we tend to come off as if crossfit has invented the movements and workouts utilized in our programming.
Crossfit has taken what has been going on in Collegiate strength rooms and olympic lifting gyms and shaped them in a way for the general public to utilize them (oversimplified and IMO). So when an olympic coach sees an olympic lift in a workout that is 135# power snatch for time, I think it makes him wince. To him the snatch is a power movement done in reps of 5 or less, not something you do 30 reps of.
I think some of the bodybuilding websites might be a bit ignorant but for the most part I think most professionals "understand" it, but simply agree to disagree.

And I definitely think the ego has a little bit to do with it....
