Basically you drive a fan/paddle thing that spins through water instead of through air like in a Concept2. An interesting idea, and I like the fact it's made of wood, looks really classy. Not thinking of buying one or anything, but looks like a cool idea nonetheless.

Check it out here:

I've played with them at regattas and a friend has one. The nice things about them are the aesthetics and that they're a lot quieter than the Concept 2. So they're a good choice if you wanna keep one in your living room and crank out some meters while watching TV.

The downsides is that they feel different from a Concept 2, much smoother, and the resistance is different. It's got a monitor but the readings really aren't equivalent to what you'd get on a real erg. But it's not a bad choice for the casual home exerciser. (once you get past the boredom factor, erging has got to be one of the dullest forms of exercise out there)

Re: DIY Rowing Machine

We have been making rowers for years here in Vermont. Our Model A's and Model B are still awesome machines and you can find them typically for $350.00 or less online. They were built like tanks so the really never go away and are still accurate. We still produce all the parts or have parts to retrofit onto them. If you ever find one and need help figuring out if it is a good deal call C2 and ask for me (Greg) I will help you out.
