Are the olympic bars and plates sold at Big 5 or Sears for around $150 for the bar and 140 lbs of weight worth it? I'm looking to add to my outside home gym at a low cost. Thanks in advance.

only if you're not doing Olympic lifts with any significant weights. if you're clean and jerking or snatching real weights, get a real bar -- Pendlay or Chapman or York, or maybe Gill if you don't mind a larger diameter grip.

The trouble with the bar + plates deal is that you'll replace both and have wasted $150 if you ever start working on the Oly lifts for real. Get a nice bar and some Hi-Temp bumpers and you'll never need to replace any of it. More up front, but they'll last forever.

Glenn sells bar + plate combos, for example.

Check out play it again sports or craigs list for used iron weights. I have a $50 bar (like walmart quality) that I got when I bought a buddy's iron weights (standard brand). I use it now for Bench or Deadlifts. It comes in handy when Linda comes around (3 bars). I am not strong enough to bend it, but it's not going to last forever. The wife uses a York ladies bar, I have the Pendlay for oly lifting. A bit of shopping around and you will establish what you want to pay for iron weights ($/lb). Be cautious in variablility of the "weight" and the diameter of the holes.
