Early morning attendence

We've had our doors open for a year now, and I was just wondering how other affiliates are doing with early morning classes (530/630AM) our evening classes have been overflowing but the morning classes seem to fluctuate. The programming is the same as the evening classes, but we can't seem to establish a consistent morning crew. Any thoughts, experiences, or ideas would be welcome.

Re: Early morning attendence

We have anywhere from 13-17 in our 6Aam. Looking to eventually add a 5am.

Re: Early morning attendence

Speaking from a strictly business and marketing perspective, obviously making several assumptions (such as this is a business about making profit, rather than a labor of love)

1. alternate pricing for AM class, higher pricing for PM classes
2. expanding on 1. - longer term package deals for AM attendees
3. target schools, commuters in terms of marketing efforts
4. a big issue for me training in the AM is a lack of place to wash before getting ready to go to work, don't really want to be stinking in the office
5. a little gimmicky but free breakfast, wake up calls, coffee
6. from a statistical perspective, you'll probably find that only people within a certain radius will come to an AM class, and this radius will be smaller than your normal radius, therefore, for flyer-ing/marketing you can focus on leaflet drops in those areas rather than the wider radius.

Re: Early morning attendence

Check out the big boxes in your market and look at their schedules. We have 2 local big boxes in our market. They both open at 5:30 so we opened at 5:30. They both open with a 5:30 group exercise class. I wanted those gals who were attending those classes.

IF the other clubs opened at 5am, I would have opened at 5. I would go where the market is.

We have a busy 5:30am opening with consistent members.

Re: Early morning attendence

My box has a steady 6AM attendance of 6-10 people. They call the 6AM an express class that is only 45 minutes, this way people can finish, clean up, and be on their train to work in time.

I agree with the poster above who said to check out the commuting schedule. For example, if you're in a suburb where most people work in the closest city, if there is no commonly used mass transit you should schedule your morning classes by how long it would take a person to shower and drive to work.

Having a shower at your box would also be a huge benefit for people taking a morning class.

Re: Early morning attendence

Great posts all, thanks for the input. We had a strong 5:30 AM class going, opened a 430 class to alleviate some of the numbers from the 530PM/630PM classes, and promptly started loosing 530amers to the 430PM class. We're currently following the same workout as the evening classes, but I've been toying with the idea of running a different workout format in the AM.

Re: Early morning attendence

The 5:30 am class is probably the busiest for our gym. We will have 20-30 people at it. We just started a 7 am class this week. I am eager to see how that changes the 5:30.

Re: Early morning attendence

We have a consistent 10-15 people in both 5a and 6a... but it wasn't always like that, took time to grow. At first we offered an "early bird discount" of $10 off per month for people that only went early (which helped congestion in the later classes). After the volume picked up we cancelled that discount for new members, no reason for it anymore.
