Hand Protectors and 12.3

Hello All,

There is some confusion around the whole "grip" statement in 12.3 at our gym.

A number of competitors have chewed up hands, and are using the following as hand protectors. I don't believe these count as grip enhancers (since they act like a thin leather glove and convey no advantage) but need to get a definitive answer.

Can someone point me at an authority on this? the palm protectors I'm talking about are below from Again Faster.

Thanks in advance.

Francis

Gymnastics Grips Are Not Allowed On Open Workout 12.3
According to the Official Rulebook, gymnastics grips will not be allowed during any portion of Open Workout 12.3.
Quote:
"Subject to CrossFit’s prior approval, non-branded belts, gloves, neoprene joint sleeves and common fitness wear may be allowed at competition Events, however, no grip assistance or weight support may be derived from any device worn. In general, gear is allowed that improves safety and/or comfort, but does not confer advantage."
Those sure look like the grips that they intend to ban for this WOD, to me. Obviously, the rules are subject to interpretation, so I could be wrong. However, those grips are almost identical to the "beginner grips" that gymnasts learn to use, before they graduate to grips that have dowels in them. Examples of such grips are found here (wfs)-

What about taping your hands?

I think those are alright. The ones they are banning are gymnastics grips with a dowel at the base of the fingers which confer an mechanical advantage (similar to a hook grip).

Tape and those leather grips don't do that.

Re: Hand Protectors and 12.3

Resolved...

CrossFit Games, Mar 09 10:48 am (PST):
Hi there,
Thanks for your email. We have decided that the Again Faster grips (or any other gymnastic type grips) will not be allowed. This is with our without the dowel. Please use athletic tape to protect your hands from tears. Hold on tight and good luck!
Best,
Angel

Re: Hand Protectors and 12.3

I also use a beginner gymnastic grip that's been declared "No Go" for 12.3. I think it's silly to exclude those grips but allow gloves (?). I really think that's a misinterpretation by someone of the idea behind the rule.

Using straps for 12.2 snatch wod? No way. Using a pad with a metal hook for 12.3 on TTB? Again, no way.

But a flat gymnastic beginner grip? Not sure how that helps grip unfairly...other than preventing tears which is has for me pretty well for almost 3 years. Cheaper than tape (my $13 pair of grips is still workable from 3 yrs ago), faster put on/off, really never use chalk with them and most importantly keeps me tear free while able to train & work with no issues.

That being said - I'm not qualifying for regionals so I'm going to play along and try and use tape. If tearing starts to become a problem it will cost me some reps/rounds.

Again this is just my b@$^h session and I feel CFHQ missed the mark on this one. /rant

Re: Hand Protectors and 12.3

And they just decided on this when? Yesterday? After the event already was released?

It's absurd that you can use tape and not leather grips. There is no advantage to one over the other. Bad call.

Re: Hand Protectors and 12.3

I stand corrected. I guess I misinterpreted this:

"In general, gear is allowed that improves safety and/or comfort, but does not confer advantage."

Re: Hand Protectors and 12.3

It's probably due to the fact that someone could possibly wear the dowel kind in a video and you wouldn't be able to tell it apart from the Again Faster kind. So it's easier for video judging to just say no grips at all.
