Re: The Next Anderson Silva?

Actually I think it's pretty cool. Just because he was on a kids show doesn't mean he can't fight (6th degree black belt is pretty impressive).

We all make career moves in whichever direction they may be. Good luck to him.

Re: The Next Anderson Silva?

Not to knock Karate but with one very well known exception is doesn't seem to translate very well to MMA.

One point in his favor he ddid win a Muay Thai match at Master Toddy's.

That may just be my new line to use around work.

But sure, maybe the guy can fight, it doesn't mean we can't abuse his celebrity status and make fun of him. I would love to see him win...and then hear all the jokes about the guy getting beat by the green power ranger.

True enough. I agree with you on the karate thing (I'm biased as I am a bjj guy) but by achieving his level he has shown a good bit of dedication and probably has a great base to learn a good ground game. And his ability in Muay Thai is certainly going to help.

Re: The Next Anderson Silva?

The problem with a lot of the asian martial arts for MMA (beyond the idea that their styles incorporate methods that work best in a no-rules situation), was that they didn't have good take down defense. Now that that is stressed, some of their styles for punching/kicking could prove to be useful. Just is going to take a dedicated person to figure out how to make it work.

To be clear, I don't think we'll see, beyond the rare occurence, wheel kick knockouts, 360 roundhouses, etc. The flashier moves of karate don't have as much use in a cage imo. They are flat out too slow. However, we do still see some fighters incorporate them, if nothing else to keep the opponent guessing. The more the opponent has to be conscious of defending against, the weaker his overall defense could become.

Most MMA gyms right now focus on BJJ + Muay Thai. You still have a few guys coming from other backgrounds, such as wrestling (though they seem to only use a few facets of this in their actual fighting), catch wrestling, and other grappling styles. But it will take somebody who believes in alternative systems and with the dedication and focus to really change things in the MMA world. I don't believe we've hit the final evolution of it. Someday somebody might turn to the camera in a prep fight with Matt Hughes and say that Matt's old style won't work in the MMA world any longer.'
