Not sure. He must have been collecting arrests since about that era. I don't think Mayberry is in Kentucky, though. As far as that goes, even though there is a Hazard County, Kentucky, I'm pretty sure that the Dukes are in Tennessee.

As far as lost kids, one good piece of advice, I think--certainly what we tell our kids--is if you get lost, find a woman, ideally a mother. Not a man, and really not even a security guard.

Barry,
Like it. No, love it. Single best piece of advice I've seen in a long time and so very basic. I never thought of that.
We told our kid to find a lifeguard at the beach if it happened again. They're usually younger guys and they'll have her sit on the tower until we come along.

Great advice Barry, I'm 'cribbing' that too.

I believe youse guys are referring to that TVland sot, AKA Otis on Andy Griffith. Mount Pilot, nearby to Mayberry is in North Carolina, and the town of Mount Airy, NC claims to be the real world Mayberry. They have a museum there to prove it.

Don't forget Dean Martin, W.C. Fields, and the 3 Martini lunch. Those were the days when you could smoke on the Johnny Carson Show. The good old days, in my opinion. I'm Old School in pretty much every way you can be Old School.

As far as the kids, I'm glad you liked that advice. I'm pretty sure it was from Oprah. I'm a big fan of Gavin de Becker's "The Gift of Fear". I read one called "The apple of my eye" (title close, but possibly not exact) once, too, that I thought was pretty good. You need to drill your kids consistently. They need to understand strangers can be people they know, that they need to communicate anything weird, and need to have some understanding of situational awareness. I teach my kids too to listen to their gut.

They also know about slapping ears, poking eyes, "private parts", biting, yelling "this is not my father", breaking fingers, kicking, and other things.

My feeling is that when it comes to your kids, especially, assume nothing, and prepare for everything.

Ahh Barry! Good ol' Henry Earl! He's a legend in Lexington. The few times I've been there, I never had the good fortune of meeting the fellow, but I hear he's generally very nice. Like Barry, I won't link it, but you all know where Google is if you're determined.

The best part is his arrest record...it'll list 2 or 3 consecutive days. The guy gets out, gets drunk, gets arrested and gets to sleep it off....it's mainly during the winter that he spends alot of time in jail.

It's not just the criminals:

Morons. Dunderheads. They proliferate and spread a rate not unlike the vermin that they truly are. Fortunately they do provide leadership for the democratic political system:

"Outside of the killings, Washington has one of the lowest crime rates in the country." Mayor Marion Barry, Washington DC

"It isn't the pollution that's harming the environment. It's the impurities in our air and water that are doing it." Al Gore

"We are ready for an unforeseen event that may or may not occur" Al Gore

"If we don't succeed, we run the risk of failure." Bill Clinton

Of course, the Republicans are not without their own representative:

"I love California. I practically grew up in Phoenix." Dan Quale...who else?

Some get involved in the arts:

"Smoking kills. If you're killed you've lost a very important part of your life." Brooke Shields, during an interview to become Spokesperson for the federal anti smoking campaign. She got the job. Imagin what the other idiots were like that applied.

"Whenever I watch TV and see those poor starving kids all over the world, I can't help but cry. I mean I'd love to be skinny like that, but not with all those flies and death and stuff." Mariah Carey

Question "If you could live forever, would you and why?" Answer "I would not live forever, because we should not live forever because if we were supposed to live forever, then we would live forever, but we cannot live forever, which is why I would not live forever." Miss Alabama in the 1994 Mis USA Contest.

Or sports:

"I've never had major knee surgery on any other part of my body." Winston Bennett, U. of Kentucky forward.

"Half this game is 90% mental." Philidelphia Phillies manager, Danny Ozark

"The word genius isn't applicable in football. A genius is a guy like Norman Einstein." Joe Theisman

I always thought Quayle was confused on what party he's supposed to be in.

"What a waste it is to lose one's mind. Or not to have a mind is being very
wasteful. How true that is."
-- Dan Quayle

And we can't leave out the boss:

"It's no exaggeration to say that the undecideds could go one way or
another."
-- George Bush, US President

"I have opinions of my own -- strong opinions -- but I don't always agree
with them."
-- George Bush, US President

And the good 'ol DC mayor:

"Outside of the killings, Washington has one of the lowest crime rates in
the country."
-- Mayor Marion Barry, Washington, D.C.

My personal Slick Willy fav:

"You know the one thing that's wrong with this country? Everyone gets a chance to have their fair say."
President William Clinton addressing the people of Philadelphia, May 28, 1993 in the Courtyard, City Hall, Philadelphia, PA.
