Fellas,

I have an out of shape teenage cousin who I'm trying to introduce to crossfit. He refuses because he's been told by his fellow lazy brethren that working out and gain muscle " shrinks your manhood". From personal experince this is nonsense, but he won't budge. Has anyone else heard of this? Is there any factual evidence to it? Excuse the nature of the post, but I'm really working on this young man to make some lifestyle changes.

Steve

Hey Steven,

Nope - not true (unless you're taking steroids). However, sitting around and gaining fat near the waistline will make his manhood LOOK smaller (think of a scared turtle).

Hope this helps,

Ryan

Thats a myth I had not heard before. There are effects on the sex organs from steroid use, but weight training and proper nutrition can't have anything but positive effects. The increase in testosterone and growth hormone from crossfit kind of intesity and proper nutrition can't do anything but help that.

This is probably a perception error based on the pervasive use of steroids and the results there. Training without steroids will not have this effect.

Fat and out of shape = more manly? On what planet?

An excuse as lame as that is a desperate excuse avoid working out. Odds are that if you eliminate that excuse, he'll come up with another.

Tell him that the CF WU includes weighted dips with 5lbs attached to his "manhood". He'll be impressing the girls in no time.

Someone told me that when I was a kid too... Couldn't be farther from the truth. The more bodyfat you lose, the more of it you can see, right? And it seems to me that most women appreciate a man in shape, more than a couch potato.

In all areas of life misery lovers company. It may be that his pals just love to moan and love company that joins in with them. He needs to be seperated from them immediately otherwise it'll be a continual uphill battle with you having any influence. Showing them up for what they are might be a way to tackle it.
