Rope climbs + oly lifting ... tough combo?

Are rope climbs supposed to make wods much tougher than anticipated?

Our affiliate wod today was a combination rope climb & oly lifting. When I got to the box, it didn't seem like a hard workout. But after the first rope climb, things got exponentially tough for me. By round 5, I was utterly spent.

5 rounds for time:

5 split jerks (115#)
5 bar dips
5 back squats (115#)
5 chinups
1 rope climb (15')

The reason I ask is I am new to rope climbing (pinching feet method) and am curious if this is typical or will it get easier in time. I watched numerous elite men & women struggle in wod4 at the NW Regional last month and am thinking the rope climb was a big reason why.

Thoughts?

Absolutely! Although it does get easier the more you do it.

Climbing the rope tends to destroy your grip/forearm strength and it is pretty darn taxing as a whole. I'm forced to due legless rope climbs starting from the floor due to a a low ceiling, which is makes it that much worse. A workout like Tommy V from last week will fry you.

They call that a "weakness." You should work on those! We all have them.
