In the Exersice Video demos they both look they same.

Hi Joseph,

In the back extension the vertebrae are kept in a mostly static position relative to each other. The 'hinge' of the movement lies in hip flexion on the way down and hip extension on the rising portion.

Things change in the hip back extension. Although some movement remains in the hips, a large amount of the flexion/extension has shifted to the trunk in this move. Imagine a large piece of plywood balanced horizontally on your butt. Your goal is to place one vertebrae at a time, starting with the lowest one, against that piece of plywood as your torso rises.

Similar to Ryan said a different way:

From the bottom of the movement (ie head at lowest position)to torso parallel to the floor:

Back extension: Back stays rigid from head to butt

Hip back extension: Back curls up from lower back to head one vertebrae at a time. Imagine the worm movement from break dancing.
