Elbow & Shoulder Pain

I have quite a few clients who are 40+ and have started CrossFit after a long time period of not exercising at all. A few of them are experiencing pain in their elbows, wrists and shoulders. Does anyone else have this issue and does it have anything to do with the age factor and the lack of experience factor? Any ideas on how to modify?

Well, if it's tendon/bone then it's overuse. Need to cut back and up recover... ice, more sleep, improved, diet, etc.

If it's soft tissue then it's usually movement dysfunction. Most often limited range of motion from tight muscles or poor posture that should be corrected

If you can pinpoint the movements that injured them, you may be more able to identify points that need to be strengthened to avoid future injury.

Maybe tight upper body in general, together with too much too soon? Older people without training experience will be tight, I would guess.

Prevention:
- warm up (really, do it), especially before any fast movements
- scale exercises until people can do them with effort but without being wiped out each session
- rest! older people need more of this
- introduce them to dynamic stretches like broomstick stretch etc.
- introduce them to trigger point self-massage (see sig below)

If this is a general issue in your client base (meaning, not just an individual thing), maybe you should think about modifying your training approach for these people. How does a typical session for those "few of them" look like?

I have recent bout of tendonitis in my right elbow. I was at +12 months of CF, 46 yrs old. About a month ago we had a series of WODs that seemed Arm/upperbody centric and that combined with my desk/mouse work triggered the pain. I tried 2-3 weeks of reduced WODs but the desk/mouse were keeping me down. I am now working a trackball and some other things to help.

Being older is harder (sts) and needs some care and feeding but also ask them what else they may do beyond CF that can cause pain.
