I'm heading to the rocky mountains in Alberta to do some hiking, rock climbing, and whitewater canoeing. I think the longest we'll be away from a town at one time is 5 days.
I'm going with a group and they said that food is provided. I'm pretty sure it's going to be crappy cheap food like peanut butter and white bread. I'm thinking of packing some additional stuff like beef jerky. Obviously it needs to be compact and relatively light. Any suggestions or tips on backcountry nutrition? Thanks, Adam |

How about a bear and a sharp knife?

Google pemmican. Best nutrition wise, as jerky alone is devoid of fat pretty much and fat helps protein assimilation.

As Jibreel said, pemmican. Or beef jerky as you have stated with a huge Ziploc of nuts. Take a Ziploc of macadamias or brazil nuts as they are quite potent fat block wise.
This is a great dehydrator for home use: http://www.target.com/gp/detail.html/sr=1-3/qid=1145380174/ref=sr_1_3/601-469252 9-5540923?%5Fencoding=UTF8&asin=B00004W4V4 For marinade, I use (modified from Robb's suggestions in PM 5): 1 lb beef or buffalo Juice from 4 lemons/limes 1 tbsp honey (cuts the acidic flavor of the lemon juice) Some mix of spices (total of a couple tbsp): cumin, paprika, ginger, garlic, Italian seasoning, habanero powder. |

Canned little fish. Sardines, kipper snacks.
Dried fruit without preservatives or sugar. Nuts of all types. That should pretty much cover the Zone/Paleo bases. Elaborate as you wish. |

Just eat the weakest in your group. You can then bring beer for the carbs.
Otherwise I reccomend tuna, pemmican (NOT the Brand of jerky, actual "pemmican"), and dried fruit (drink lots of water to help fill you up when eating carb dense foods). |

If the group has any marathon runners in it avoid eating them, as they are probably so lean that they would do you more harm then good similar to Rabbit meat. Go for the brains most nutrient content. If you've got any fatties to eat avoid their livers as they probably consume far too much alcohol, and their meat would be like eating an estrogenated milk cow. "Natural" (if their is such a thing these days) bodybuilders or maybe a mountain guide would be your best choices nutrition wise as they would have some fat stores around the organs but be conscious enough to eat fairly good proteins and vegetable matter on a daily basis.

I know it has a lot of Salt in it but it keeps for a couple of days if not more if you keep it cool. Salami. I usually get the 2 pounder from Costco. It will be like desert because it tastes so good.
