Mistakes made when opening a box.....

Hey everyone,
Going through I see a lot of people giving advice on what to look out for when opening a box, but did not see any threads that collected experienced pitfalls in one area.

I figured I would begin the list as I am opening a place in a few weeks and have already gone through a bit of a learning curve.....

1. Go to town hall and ensure that the zoning for the area will allow you to have a gym facility. While there was a child's gym in my box before me, the applied under a retail license as opposed to a "gym" facility.

2. Parking, Parking, Parking! Make sure you have enough!

3. Have a full staff ready to go or ready to be implemented over time before you open your box.

Let's keep this going!

Re: Mistakes made when opening a box.....

1. Don't be overtly friendly & helpful to folks trying to open affiliates next to you. It's a business & people will do bad things when money's involved.

2. Do not direct mail

3. Plan your pull-up bars properly & with growth in mind.

4. Be as knowledgeable in nutrition as in training or at least try to bridge the gap.

5. When trying to hire folks - passion for CrossFit is not enough. Passion for helping others & ability to communicate is just as or possibly much more important.

I agree with points 1,3,4&5 (even though im not looking to hire I agree it's a good point)

I just have a question about the direct mail, could you elaborate on that please? It's not something that we've done at our box, the majority of our advertising has been word of mouth but i'd like to know more about your experiences with direct mail as it could have been an option for our box in the future.

Thanks Leonid

Leon.

It's been a while - we direct mailed over 1.5 years ago.

End result: about $1200 spend, about 5 phone calls, 2 walk ins, 0 sign-ups.

If it works for some folks - great. Just didn't work for us.

It's not something we've tried but could have been an option. Going off those numbers I have to agree that it's definitely not worth while. $1200 with no return must have hurt at the time.

Re: Mistakes made when opening a box.....

Yes, direct marketing like mailing has a very slim return. This was even true for me when I owned a retail store. Spent thousands on newspaper inserts, full page color mailers, and more..and the return was 1-2%. But for retail it's something you have to do because it helps you get new customers and they will usually keep coming back. CrossFit doesn't quite fit that model of "make your customers think of you when they need something".

Agree...from day one and use it.

If you are thinking about Mind Body...get it, train on it and know how to use it BEFORE you open. Finding the time to train while running your box will be frustrating...doable, but frustrating. Don't get me wrong....great customer support there...it's the time factor involved. :-)
