I recently purchased Matt Furey's book...Combat Fitness. I wondered if anyone out there has seen his Combat Abs workout and what do you think about it? What are the "magnificent seven" Thanks.

I dealt with and read Matt Furey's works for a few years before finding CrossFit.

None of my thoughts on him are positive, so I will not share them here.

For outstanding "abs" and a solid core, here are some great exercises to get you started:

L-sit pullups
Full Contact Twists
Kettlebell or dumbbell swings
Kettlebell, dumbbell, or barbell snatches
One-legged squats (aka pistols)
One-armed pushups
One-armed/one-legged pushups
Handstand pushups
Headstand leg raises

Many of these do not directly work your abdominals. Instead, they will teach your abs to work with the rest of your body and move or lift as a solid unit.

There are more, of course, and I'm sure that other CrossFitters will add to my list. These are what have worked for me.

Hanging knees to elbows
overhead squats
hollow rocks

Overhead Squats are one of the best core exercises...and one of the best developers of the serratus anterior (that's the muscle that looks like fingers coming across the rib cage). I also happen to be a firm believer in gymnastics exercises such as l-sits and jacknives for a solid core. Gymnasts have got it right when it comes to core training...and it shows. If you cant afford rings, those 10 dollar ab wheels at wal mart are fantastic. I keep one in my office and use it when i'm bored.

Stay away from Furey's products. Get FREE (and superior, in my opinion) bodyweight workouts from; for ab-specific freebies, check out's articles.

I'd concur you can do better than Furey, and I too started with him, and then found Pavel, and then found coach. I suggest you skip a few steps ahead and listen to the above posts. To the above, I'd add windshield wipers (in the hang, go belly to the sky, toes up, and roll for side to side) and turkish getups. The getups will kill.
