Are USA top of the Medal Chart in USA?

Just wondering because I see in one of the US newspapers they have the order of merit in total medals and not Golds?? Is this a one-off or are you winning the table by USA rules.

The media in the US has traditionally listed it as total medals, whereas the rest of the world looks at Golds. Not sure why.

Depends on the list - some go with gold, some with total medals won. China is racking up quite a few gold this year, and thats great as they have emerged as a strong world power. Has nothing to do with our lists, because if you look at total medals won during the modern Olympics, we are so far ahead its ridiculous.

Sort by Gold medals, you'll see what I'm talking about. Its too bad the USSR doesn't exist anymore they were a fun competitor as a whole.

I think it will be very close in 4 years time when it comes to my backyard between USA and China. On our chart George, GB is 3rd (in Golds), which is best we have done in 100 years. Still I cant see us getting anywhere near USA come 2012. I might pick an event as in 4 years I will only be 42!!

Actually, I think Scott's referring to this olympics only (2008 summer), which has been really good to the Brits.

Actually I really like the UK coverage here--seems to be much more on the events (less "And this is a Cinderella story of so-and-so's life and all the trials and tribulation's she's come through to be here" mini-biopics, and more coverage of actual Olympics). We ate lunch in a pub where a bunch of old guys were watching the recent bicycling events and in a murmuring, understated way you could tell they were really proud of the UK lads.

The way I look at the which is more important having more golds vs. having more medals is this. Gold=3points, silver=2points, bronze=1point. Crossfit makes you think about making everything quantifiable

That sounds more like X-Factor than the Olympics Victor. I can just hear the music in the background
