Abdominal Strength on Starting Strength

I've read Starting Strength and the wiki and the original protocol doesn't call for any abdominal specific exercises. Apparently, the Press is good for abs. My shoulders, arms, quads, and back are all much stronger and, to be honest, bigger than before SS, however, my abdomen has no musculature or definition. I'd like to add some abs to my Onus Wensler workout (after completing my SS exercises). The wiki recommends weighted situps, Knees to elbows, and L-chinups. Should I just add a few sets of each following my regular workout? or change it up? or do something different?

Thanks,
Brent

Re: Abdominal Strength on Starting Strength

That's fine. 3 sets of 10 or whatever I think it said somewhere.

-----------

The abs are in NO way the only part of the core... besides all of hte muscles in the lower back there's TONS surrounding and deep to the abs.... so saying that it's not working core is downright wrong.

Also, definition doesn't mean they're not working.

Personally, I think you're being too superficial but whatever if that's what you want then go for it.

Form follows function.

Doing situps, or "ab work" is not going to give you definition in your midsection. That's ALL diet.

Re: Abdominal Strength on Starting Strength

true, but one has to HAVE abdomenal muscles worth speaking of to have definition when the diet reveals them.

Re: Abdominal Strength on Starting Strength

Well true enough triple poster (lol), but now you are also getting into the myth of isolation exercises being effective. I imagine that if your squat, DL, and press are improving, so is your core strength and necessarily your "abs." Probably more then you realize, but anyway...

Sure, feel free to add some of that stuff after your workout, or before. K2e, abmat, ghd's, L-sits...all good. windshield wipers too

LOL, if I could do windshield wipers I wouldn't be asking about abs

Re: Abdominal Strength on Starting Strength

Every excersize in SS hits the midsection (the bench does too if you do it right). I found my lower back was weak link in the dead lift and squat so I added a bit of work for it, 2 sets of 10. If you are getting stronger, the program is working and leave it alone. If you are consistently being held back by a particular body, first check your form. If you form is solid, then add some work in for that.

You are doing the power cleans, right?
