Re: How much nuts and seeds?

I am a part of the "can't lose the belly flab, ok I'm overeating nuts" crew.

I dunno. Maybe we just have to learn how to accept ourselves?

Horrors! I KNOW!!!

That's totally un-American It would mean joblessness and poverty for most of the people in the fitness, supplement and cosmetic surgery industries.

Re: How much nuts and seeds?

I used to eat a lot of nuts too without realizing the plethora of other great fat sources out there!

Good fat sources that do not include nuts are: olive oil, coconut oil, walnut oil, avocado, wild ruminant fats, olives, and bacon.

I usually stick to the oils and consume by the tablespoon but I like to mix it up once in a while.

The benefits of nut consumption are dose dependant but as this recent meta-analysis (link) of 25 studies shows just 67g per day can result in a significant improvement in blood lipids.

Studies have shown that there is an inverse correlation between nut consumption and BMI (link) whereas there is a positive correlation between fat intake and BMI (link) therefore it would seem wise to choose nuts over other sources of dietary fats.

Re: How much nuts and seeds?

Seems like the issue with nuts is potentially skewing your Omega 6:Omega 3 fat ratios with too many nuts, not so much "too much fat."

If it was as simple as "too much fat," then you could argue for eating all the nuts you want and cutting out avocados, meat, olive oil, etc.

That said, if you are getting adequate or near adequate fat from other sources, then too much nuts/seeds might be either pushing your macronutrient intake too much into the fat zone, or your overall caloric intake too high (nuts are very calorically dense).

All that said, from a Paleo perspective, seems fairly intuitive to me to eat a healthy amount of nuts and seeds, as well as meat.

Grok could find nuts and seeds pretty much year round, but he would have been hard-pressed (pardon the pun) to grab a bottle of Bertolli Extra Virgin off the shelf.

Though I do think it is important to make sure you're getting a good balance of animal-derived Omega 3's (either from supplementation or pastured meats, butter, eggs and wild game).

There's some debate about cashews. In fact, it was discussed at length in another thread a couple of months back.

All edible nuts and peanuts, which aren't technically nuts, are good for you.
