With what you said, until the bar passes the knees the shoulders should be in front of the bar while in air?
It's really weird that rip didn't mention the upper back in the deadlift part...
So shoulder blades pinched as much as I can while gripping the bar...
Starting Strength, 1st Ed., Page 121. Second and third sentences: "The back should stay at the same angle with the floor, and the hip angle opens up only slightly as the femur gets more vertical. It is only after the bar clears the knees that the back angle, and consequently the hip angle, begins to change significantly." Mark Rippetoe
He also does mention the upper back. He does not say to pinch shoulder blades but to keep the shoulders firm in natural position - my interpretation.
