How much nuts and seeds?

Hi there!

Quick question. How much nuts and seeds are recommended? I donít want to go overboard with the quantity I consume, they pack a real caloric punch.

The only reference Iíve got is ďless than 4ozĒ of either nuts and-or seeds in Cordainís The Paleo Diet book.

Also, are ALL nuts and seeds recommended? Cordain suggests walnuts due to their good Omega 3 to 6 ratio. Any other recommended nuts or seeds?

Cheers and thank you!

Juan Manuel.

Re: How much nuts and seeds?

There was a thread about this on the BB forums and it was really good but I seemed to have lost the link. But I remember the guy saying that no more than 1, max 2 servings (1 serving = 1/4 cup) of nuts per day. There was a list of reasons why to do this, but I only remember one of them, which is that nuts cause digestive problems.

Not all nuts and seeds are recommended. If you read the book, there is a page in there that has the ratios of omega 3 to omega 6 fats of many nuts and lists the good and bad nuts. The good nuts are walnuts, pecans and almonds (may be forgetting one). The bad ones are legumes (anything else that are not the good nuts ). Go back to the book and if you can't find it there, check the paleo site about it.

Actually pecans are not the best nut but I love em anyway!! Peanuts are not nuts, but legumes! Macadamias are a great nut (but on zone 1 nut=1 fat block!). And yeas, nut cause digestive issues for many, myself included. i rarely eat/use nuts! There was something over at Performance Menu recently about this but I cant pull it up now as there seems to be something going on with their server! (wfs)

Your missing good one might be macadamias, which are very highly monounsaturated and have a W6/W3 ratio of about 6, superior to EVOO and avocadoes at about 13.

The "bad" ones are not really nuts, but legumes, of which I'm only aware of peanuts.

Pretty much a walnut/macadamia nut guy myself. Don't eat too many brazil nuts - you can over do selenium which can give you same symptoms as radiation poisoning.

Watching House on Fox taught me that.

Re: How much nuts and seeds?

I try and eat about 10-12 almonds twice a day for my daily fat intake.

I eat 10 with dinner and then another ten pre-bed time with either Casein Protein shake or 1c Cottage Cheese.

But you're shooting for about 10-15 almonds per serving.

4oz per serving is a lot.

And yes they do cause digestive problems if not chewed properly and broken down completely.

Re: How much nuts and seeds?

I realize this is an old thread but figure why start a new one if one already exists. Are there any other suggestions on serving size for nuts? I'm trying to integrate some of the paleo principles into my diet. I want to eat the nuts as snacks in between meals coupled with fruits or veggies. Main goals are weight loss and strength gain.

Re: How much nuts and seeds?

I'm curious about this as well. I'm trying to lose body fat around my middle and was told that I was eating WAY too many almonds...but it seems to be a quick and easy snack when I'm hungry between meals. Should most of my fat be coming from my meat sources and olive oil instead?
