Why are many of the exercises female names?

Great question! Better to ask and be ignorant for a moment than stupid forever.

The Girls are benchmark workouts. These workout measure important elements of fitness. The girl workouts repeat from time to time so that we can meaure our progress. Most of the other workouts do not repeat regularly. As a sidenote Coach got the idea from how the National Weather Service names storms after women. Recently (11/6/05), a workout was also named after Jeff Taylor to honor a Navy Seal who died in a helicopter crash.
Naming or labeling the workouts makes them easier to remember and identify. Plus, it makes it fun. The Crossfit community has enjoyed a lot of humor as a result of the girls. ie Crossfit where the men are tough and the women are tougher.

Many of your questions can be answered by going to Lynne's Crossfit FAQ http://www.mitymous.net/weights/xfitfaq.htm

I remember the WOD of JT. I hope we do that exercise at least once a month in that man's honor.

I'd like to quote Michael Street - "Respect the women. Each demands it. All will exploit weakness and rub your face in it - guaranteed"

It's for the same reason hurricanes are named after women.

Serious.

Anything that can leave you panting and a writhing puddle of your own sweat but still begging for more requires a girl's name.

Eugene and Mike,

That was good. I think I'll tell me wife next time I do Helen. She's not familiar with crossfit at all, so she'll have no idea what I'm talking about.
