palms facing the ceiling or facing the floor? or is it whichever one is more comfortable?

i guess for a competitive gymnast, it'd be palms towards the floor...that would ease the transition to a maltese or cross, right?

Training with a supine grip (palms to the floor) is developmental for cross and maltese as you said. Working them with a pronated grip is easier on the elbows. Work both as long as your elbows are healthy.
