"I'm not opening a gym, I'm opening a ......"

In an effort to define a much larger universe of health and fitness, I am struggling to explain to people what my new affiliate might be. If I call it a "gym", I am limiting the value of the entity I am creating and allowing for people to immediately "box me into" a certain perception of what a gym is to them. Unlike a gym, CF offers hands on personal trainer attention, communal camaraderie and motivation, nutrition guidance and insight and a whole host of other holistic health and fitness benefits.

So, if I'm not opening a gym, what am I opening? Please come back with your thoughts as I'd like to think this is a huge upside for any CF affiliate defining the value they offer. Thanks!

You're right to avoid "gym" as your terminology. For reasons that it sounds like you already grasp.

I use "training facility" when I just have a moment with someone, but I also use different terms for different people if I know my audience well or have more time. I might add "athletic" to the front of that if I am talking to someone actively engaged in sports or work demands.

When I have 15 seconds, I might say "it's a gym, with the last 40 years of bull**** marketing and Arnold Schwarzenegger extracted. What's left is what actually works for normal people. We run, we lift weights, we learn proper diet, we get lean, fit, and strong...." My elevator speech.

Find your voice. What works for me may not work for you.

Long answer. Sorry.

You operate a "training facility", or a "strength & conditioning facility". The word "facility" changes the entire connotation. A "gym" is whack.

At CrossFit LA they use the term "School of Elite Fitness" which I like. The difference between what we do and the typical"gym" is that people actually learn something at our facilities. It's all part of the total fitness experience that CF provides which the big boxes will never comprehend.

Torture Chamber
Adult Playground
Sweat Shop
The Place To Be

We use both Gym & Training facility for describing what we do depending on a person.
