mid-back issue

About 13 years ago, I pulled a muscle in my back when placing my kid in his car seat, bending in a rounded way rather than at my knees (in good squat form). I suffered some spasms and was in a fair amount of pain for 5 days or so.

Ever since then, I have a tendency to pull the same muscle periodically, like once every 4-6 months. I treat it with heat, rest and anti-inflammatories, and the problem subsides within days. But it still annoys me (and leads to cursing my son for being too heavy when he was six months old).

In any event, I wonder if anyone has any advice for how to avoid this particular injury. The area I am referring to is a few inches below my shoulder blades, just a few inches to the left of the center of my back. I am relatively sure that the diagnosis is a muscle pull (though it also feels like a tightening sensation).

Does this sound like just a general lack of stretching if the problem, or could this reflect a muscle imbalance of some kind?

You might want to look into Trigger Points. We've had some threads on this last year.

Have you accomplished a good strong backbend? After adding backbends to my workouts and cooldowns my back became incredibly strong and flexible. I have very little back pain these days.
