Have you ever heard of people eating horse meat?

I know a few guys that do. I looked at the profile and a pound is something like 97 g of protein with very little fat.

It's pretty uncommon in western society just because horse has become a pet/sport animal, but it certainly isn't frowned on elsewhere in the world, or historically here - it's a perfectly edible source of meat

"On November 18, 2011, the ban on the slaughter of horses for meat was lifted as part of the Consolidated and Further Continuing Appropriations Act for Fiscal Year 2012"

There's no way I'd eat meat from horses raised in the US:

Horses, unlike traditional food animals in the United States, are not raised or medicated during their lifetime with the intent of one day becoming human food. Because American horses are not "intended" for the human food chain, throughout their lives they will often have received medications that are banned by the FDA for use at any time during the life of food animals.

Approved use of medications in food animals is specifically contingent upon observation of recommended withdrawal times. Withdrawal times have been experimentally determined in traditional food animals; however, withdrawal times for these drugs have not been established in horses. Thus, medications that are FDA approved for use in traditional food animals come with specific withdrawal schedules printed on the packaging, while the same medications, purchased for horses do not include the requisite withdrawal schedule, but simply state "NOT FOR USE IN HORSES INTENDED FOR FOOD".

That being said, horsemeat has a good nutritional profile. If I had the opportunity to find some raised specifically for consumption (a la the grassfed beef movement) I'd try it.

AFAIK even though funding for inspections has been restored, there are no US slaughterhouses processing horses. So any horse meat in the US is either from a horse slaughtered for personal consumption (i.e. you own the horse) or it's black market meat.

Actually funding was stopped for the inspection of slaughter houses by the Department of Agriculture. That funding has been restored.

A. Overeem is a classic example of a person who eats Horse meat regularly. If Horse meat does that, I want to eat some.

I believe the horses were being shipped to Canada for slaughter, and
then back to the US for consumption.

Canada and Mexico, most of the meat probably went overseas where there is a bigger market for the product.

Yes it does, it's all in the horse meat.

Overeem's "A" sample was flagged for an elevated T/E ratio that exeeded 10-to-1, well over the 6-to-1 limit.

I know a few guys from south America and they swear by it. Citing magical blood cleaning properties. They are pretty big dudes, but I'm sure that comes from eating a host of meats. That's what prompted my question.

As was said above , I wouldn't be opposed to eating it provided it wasn't a let or sport horse. The guys I know get black market horse meat... Way too sketchy for me.
