Yams vs. Sweet Potatoes

I tried to search but I couldn't really find what I was looking for.

Are sweet potatoes yellow on the inside or orange? What's labelled as a sweet potato at the grocery store is orange inside...I was told this was a yam. I guess I just really want to know the difference and which one is recommended by Robb Wolf.

Thanks for any info.

Re: Yams vs. Sweet Potatoes

Both. I live 50 miles from the sweet potato capital of the world, and believe me good sweet potatoes are orange (they can other colors) in the middle and have been left in cool storage to ripen. People here buy them by the pallet, not just by the box.

They are a from a different family though.

Ok...I just read that same thing. Is there a variety of sweet potato that is better than another?

The orange colored sweet potatoes are sweeter, more of a North American preference. The white/cream colored sweet potatoes are a lot less sweet, more used in asian and latin cultures.

The purple sweet potatoes (Okinawan) are asian and are a lot more rare in the US. You can find them though.

I don't know if one is better for you than the other but I do know that anyone that works with sweet potatoes will tell you not to avoid the skin. Lots of good stuff there. The Okinawan potatoes do have all the benefits that usually comes from purple fruits and vegetables (e.g. antioxidants).

There is a difference between a yam and a sweet potato but in North America people usually use the two words for the same food.

Re: Yams vs. Sweet Potatoes

I make mashed sweet potatoes with the skin all the time. I live 50 miles from Vardaman, MS, the sweet potato capital of the freaking world. A great deal of the sweet potatoes you eat come from here.

If you want the best of the best of orange flesh sweet potato, you get them from Vardaman.
