I need a bar and some plates to get started... I found this:

worthwhile? Im having difficulty finding something in the $300 max range...which is what I can afford at this time. Suggestions?

Used is the way to go for those on a budget. Garage sales, ebay, craigslist, used sporting goods stores...

shipping is where we all get killed eh? I found a great deal on a plate tree and a great selection of plates but its in CA! im in miami...
