First of all apologies as I'm sure this has been covered before but I can't find it anywhere.

I've started using some Whey Powder in addition to my usual zone intake to provide some cheap and easy additional protein to add some LBM. I was just wondering is there an optimal time for using the stuff? I generally work out just before lunch and have a 2:1 carb protein snack within about 15 mins and try to have a protein rich lunch about 30min-1 hour after the WoD.

Any suggestions

I was considering using it as an afternoon snack around 4pm?

Thanks in advance

Baz

Make sure to add some fats into it when you are not taking it after a workout. Real food is better for losing weight due to the TEF of protein, but if you are just wanting the grams for muscle, then the shake should be ok.

Thanks Mike
What is TEF?

Any idea about when is the best tome to take it? Straight after exercise? with the meal 45 mins later? or before bed?

Thanks

Thermic Effect of Food....digestion takes alot of energy and whole proteins require the most...5-6 small meals of whole protein a day will boost your metabolism and fat loss efforts.

Best times....maybe AM and post workout right after.

Mikes point is well made, ALWAYS consume some protein with your carbs.

The very highest TEF meal is meal one, nothing comes close. If you are on a severely restricted carb diet, eat all those carbs with first meal of day, or at minimum only consume fruit with meal one, thats a pretty hard 'rule'.

I do have a question about the TEF factor of protein being the highest, as the cumulative effort of gastric emptying is far higher for fats than protein (excluding MCT's, of course). Do you have any data about the TEF being higher for protein than for fat? I would love to have that, if you can dig it up.
