Power Rack or Squat Stand?

I am thinking about selling off my power rack and getting a squat stand very similar to the one below. I was hoping someone might have some pro's/con's of doing the squat stand vs the power rack.

Thanks

Re: Power Rack or Squat Stand?

Here are some:

Footprint is larger - CON
OHS - PRO
No Pullups - Neutral (who wants to do a pullup in a power rack anyway?)
No adjustment needed for height - PRO
No benchpress spot (maybe?) - CON

I have a power rack and a set of the york press squat stands. I find this to be the perfect setup for my home gym for nearly every situation.

do you have a picture of your power rack?

what is it about the power rack that makes you unhappy?

Re: Power Rack or Squat Stand?

Thanks Paul. The larger footprint should not be an issue for me as I already have 1/2 of the gym dedicated to the rack and with the layout I am planning I should actually have more room since I would be able to back the squat rack against the wall. The pullup bar is worthless, but it does make for a nice place to hang lower rings. Oh, the only time I have done bench since I started CF was last weekend when I went to a big-box gym with a friend; I used DB's too.

The main thing I do not like about it is that I cannot rack for OH lifts.

Re: Power Rack or Squat Stand?

Hey Thomas,

If you don't mind my asking, who did you get your power rack from? I'm going to go with a power rack for my home gym and I'm thinking of ordering one from Rock Solid Fitness. They seem to have some pretty good racks at good prices. Anyone have any experience with Rock Solid to relate?

Thanks,
Joe B.

Re: Power Rack or Squat Stand?

I'm confused. Unless you have the world's worst power rack, I see no reason to switch to the stand you posted. A power rack is way more versatile.

Re: Power Rack or Squat Stand?

Joe, I grabbed it off of Craigslist.

Anthony, agreed the versatility of the power rack is far more but I cannot go OH in it which leaves me only using it for squats.

Re: Power Rack or Squat Stand?

Thomas, can you put your j-hooks on the outside of the rack?

Re: Power Rack or Squat Stand?

Thomas,

Our YMCA has a squat stand very similar to the one shown in your picture. I personally consider it to be almost worthless because the rails are too high and I cannot squat to full depth. If you get this, you might check out the height first. It is good for assisted HSPU with a bar across the hooks, and pretty good for OHS if you prefer not doing a push jerk to lock out overhead.

Re: Power Rack or Squat Stand?

Thomas, one more thing, I'm speaking from experience when I say it's crap. Take a look at my avatar - I used that static squat stand for YEARS and hated it (only choice I had at local gym). Like Scott mentioned you may run into issues with depth. You may also run into issues with a comfortable unrack height (for some it was too low or too high, nothing in between). You may also hit the pin above when unracking (that's great for confidence when going for a heavy squat - LOL). And you'll have to walk completely outside of the rack for OHS because if you drop the bar you are guaranteed to bend it when it hits the safety arms.

If you can't move your j-hooks to the outside (most power racks can do this), then look into squat stands or a half rack. But I'd avoid the static squat stand you posted at all costs.
