First post, long time lurker, wondering what the two sticks being held by the trainers are for in the pic on Dec 27, ran a search but couldn't find anything.
I thought the bar should scrape your shins during deadlifts, would the sticks be to keep from swinging the bar away from your body?
Thanks

You got it. Preventing Saul from swinging the bar out when cleaning.

My guess is that it's for olympic lifting technique, not deadlifting. It's not likely a heavy deadlift is going to swing out away from the body.

This technique works well when teaching someone how to clean, snatch, deadlift, and even squats. It is usually done at a lighter weight when someone is learning the exercise. By the time someone has a heavy weight (relatively) in these exercises, then they shouldn't need this stick drill. Some coaches even stand in front of the bar during an exercise like Snatches to force the lifter to keep the bar close....or run the risk of smashing the coach with the bar...good times.
