I was just rereading a few chapters of A Game of Thrones on a plane ride, and all I can say is "damn". Really reminded me why I am patiently waiting like a little ***** for A Dance With Dragons to come out. You just can't stay mad at GRRM when he writes stuff like this.

A really good fantasy series is "Codex Alera" by Jim Butcher. Although I haven't read a whole lot of fantasy books, this series is in stiff competition with Harry Potter; it's that good. There are six books in the series, so if you like the first one you will be entertained for awhile. I loved reading every book and the next book is better than the last.

Also, a while back I'd noticed that those books were going up (slowly, piece by piece) for free online. Easy way to dip your toes in and see if it's comfy.

Until book 6. That ending really annoyed me. But books 1-5 and all but the last 1/4 of book 6 were great.

I'm stoked on the HBO series for ASoIaF though. I think HBO will do it right - just look at the quality of some of their other series. They're unlikely to "dumb it down" for audiences and stick with what made the series awesome - complex characters, complex relationships, violence, sex, and bad-assery.

As well as me having to re-read to remember it all. It's been a few years since I've read them, so I just remember general things and some characters. When the next book comes out, I'll be re-reading them for sure.

I can say that I do remember being a big fan of Jon Snow and one of the Cleganes, but I can't remember which.

Edit - it's definitely Sandor that I liked. Just read the wiki for both and, well, without giving spoilers, Gregor is not the type of character I would ever sympathize with or come to like.

Sandor is a pretty cool guy. Gregor is still a very interesting character, in that I look at him and go "I wonder how this guy got so ****ing surly. Did he have some kind of hormonal imbalance, or is there more to it?"
