Re: jets or helos?
John, at the risk of sounding mean-spirited (and I'm not, God knows I envy anyone who can fly), if you have to ask you're probably not meant for jets. Jet guys all believe (whether it's true or not) that they are made for jets, as Tom indicated, even though many like Tom find themselves quite happy at less than Mach 1 (I don't say Mach 2 because we don't have anything that goes that fast anymore). Thinking rationally about your choice betrays a level of maturity not normally attributed to jet pilots.
Remember the man who took his young son to the air show. The son was absolutely impressed with everything he saw, and said, "Dad, when I grow up I want to be a fighter pilot!" The father thought for a moment, and replied, "Son, you can't have it both ways." |

Re: jets or helos?
Michael is actually right. Prowlers are a pretty good deal. They are tough to get aboard the boat (long spool up time on the engines), but you have 3 NFO's that do all the tough planning for the mission. You just get to fly the plane. The only down side is that the Prowler will probably go away sometime in your career and you will transistion over to Growlers (that name still makes me laugh every time). I got to ride in a Marine Prowler once at MAWTS and it was a great ride.
I can't attest to the seat as I was never an AME. Just their DIVO in the RAG, no ejection seats in the Hawkeye/COD, though. We bailout "old school" style! |

I can't speak for the Navy, but I love flying helicopters in the Air Force.

Re: jets or helos?
I've spent years with jet jocks and have hurled in the back seats of a wide array of modern tactical aircraft. I've got a few of 'em I keep handy to shut up the drivers. For carrier pilots in particular, but I'm sure it applies to the AF variety as well:
Why does the pilot give the thumb's up to the Cat O before he launches? To show he doesn't have both thumbs up his a**. |

How does a fighter pilot look to a helicopter pilot?
...Cold, wet and scared. |

We had a sailor get blown over the side of the ship on my first deployment and the helo was on top of him in about 3 minutes. He said that was the longest 3 minutes of his life, watching the carrier go away from him and not knowing if anyone knew if he was out there. It was dark as hell that night. He was REAL happy to see the lights of the helo on top of him. Unfortunately, he didn't have a nametag to give the rescue swimmer. |
