Since I lack the skills (both welding and mechanical) and tools to build these, any estimates on how much it would cost to show up at a local welding shop with drawings in hand to be able to leave with a pair of Pierre's Squat racks?

$80-90 for materials Sam,
as for welders I don't know any in the area so I can't say because labour costs vary..

Thanks for the response Pierre.

Could I ask you how much more, from a materials perspective, the aluminum racks cost than the steel. To be honest, it's not the weight savings that has me curious: it's the ultra cool look.

well if I purchased the aluminum from the supplier myself I buy by weight so it's cheaper than steel.

If I could order the aluminum rack's in lots of 25 or more I could get them for 250.00-275.00CAD you don't want to know how much my prototype set cost me!!!

REALLY YOU DON'T!

They are more expensive to make as they are TIG welded. And the shop I use is a precision shop that manufactures ultra-precise machining equipment so they charge alot but they guarantee their work. And I must admit the work is outstanding!

Oh what you don't see is that these racks can extend up to 9ft in height and have a Pull-Up attachment. It's pretty cool!

On the stands: For stability one could easily fix that by adding some angle iron put together in a cross shape for the bottom of the stand. Place bolts through the cross up into the bucket. Place one bolt into the bottom of the 4x4, pour concrete and you're done.

Shop rates in most any metro aread will fetch at least $70/hr. Even that might be low-balling a little.

It seems to me that after buying material, paying for welding and spending your time running around, you are maybe only $100ish from buying a good quality rack. You will have probably spent the same as the low end Bodysolid or TDS, this depends on how you value your own time.

shop rates in the US are different than here in Canada. In Sudbury I was looking $35.00 for a regular shop and closer to 100 for a precision shop! But thats Sudbury...

Like I said no idea about Ottawa area.

Yeah you can get those cheap racks for well pretty cheap!

My dad and I just started my squat stands. I'll post pictures of them after christmas when they're done and I'm back from vegas.
