There HAS to be something else at Lowe's I could use...

eye bolt or whatever it's called through a softball or baseball, a caribeener (sp?) and a foot or so of chain.

Yep. A softball and an eyebolt.

I've done this and found that the difficulty varies tremendously depending on where you grip the ball. If you grip it towards the eyebolt it's like five or ten times easier. This is a great grip trainer until you adapt to it and then it becomes difficult to judge progress objectively. I like IronMind's rotating "Rolling Thunder" better for this reason.

I'm sure you have a towel hanging around someplace, throw it over the bar and go to town.

I do do towel pull-ups, just looking to keep things fresh

Cheap grip training ideas...
Upside down kettle bell holds/farmers walks to make it harder
Plate flips
Heavy axle holds, deads, hang cleans
plate pinch
tennis ball in your palm doing pull ups
