Homemade Dog Food
(should this be in "Nutrition"???)
My girlfriend and I are adopting a "Senior" golden retriever who needs a home. After reading up on all the dog food options out there, we've come to realize that the best option may be making her food at home. Most directives indicate an equal mix (I think according to calories) of meat, grain, and vegetables. We'll include a glucosamine supplement. Can anyone offer any tips to enhance the diet? (multivitamins, etc) Thank |

Re: Homemade Dog Food
i just feed mine a high quality dry food and mix in table scraps, meat trimmings, etc. I keep all of our bacon grease and stock from slow cooked meats to pour over it and she eats it like candy. Dogs are like us, the more natural the diet the healthier they'll be. Treats are available with multivitamins mixed in to supplement if you feel it's needed.

Do you think a wolf ever eats grain or vegetables?

Re: Homemade Dog Food
Dogs aren't carnivores, they're omnivores. Wolves will quite happily eat fruit and vegetables. Sure, meat is the main course, but there's more than just that on their plate. Grains, they don't eat, but grains are a very "human" thing anyway.

Re: Homemade Dog Food
I've converted my cats to a raw diet over the last several months. I'm fortunate that here in the Twin Cities we have a local raw pet food store (WFS) which supplies all kinds of different meats. I rotate the meats between chicken, duck, pheasant, turkey, etc. My one cat who is 16 years old with arthritis and kidney disease likes it just fine. The other is a bit more finicky so I mix with a more traditional canned cat food, grain free.
