It sucks getting old!!!

Oct of 2008 I had a total knee replacement of my left knee. It took 12 months to totally recover and I was just getting back into rx'd WOD's and I tore a shoulder rotator and also will have to have a bone spur removed and AC resection on Jan 26th. (all caused by arthritis)

I am thankful that with CrossFit, I will get back to full WOD's again sometime after a 4-6 month recovery.

Re: It sucks getting old!!!

I know what you mean. I'm 36 and some days I feel like I'm 76. It's funny. I was actually going through my injuries over the last 5 years. So far I have remembered:

4 broken fingers
2 x broken nose
2x broken ankle (same ankle)
tendonitis in both upper biceps
fractured ribs
broken wrist
3-5 concussions (not sure the exact number)
chronic back pain
badly strained neck (a few times a year it seems)
partially torn left pec

There's probably more but my memory is also deteriorating. lol

Hey I'm almost 40 and feel the best I've felt. I've had some pretty nice crashes in my time too...downhill mountain biking... japanese jujutsu... I do tend to be conservative though and consider the future.

Re: It sucks getting old!!!

George-

My surgeries:
3 nose-2 sub-mucous resections; 1 septo-plasty(boxing and martial arts)
1-broken right ankle-(ice hockey)
4-shoulder separations-2 each shoulder (ice hockey and football)
1-hamate fracture (baseball)
4-knee-2 each knee-acl and lateral meniscus. (football)
1-total knee replacement (life)
2-ruptured bicep-1 @distal (bull riding) 1 @proximal (commando krav maga)
1-ruptured inguinal ligament (bull riding)
several- broken ribs-bulls and football
11-rt wrist-damaged scaphoid bone resulting in arthrodesis (solid fusion) (industrial accident)

I've always recovered quickly and to 100%. A career of athleticism and arthritic genetics is just catching up to me. I will recover and be back doing 20+rounds of Cindy, and 21/2 x deadlifts, etc.

Hopefully, the "Games' in 2011.

Holy hell Skip! That's a lot of injuries.

I forget which CFJ video it was in, but someone recently said something along the lines of "Being active people, we all do stupid things... it's just important to try to reduce it from doing stupid thing 100% of the time, to doing it say 20%, to avoid tons of injuries".

Take this to heart, friend

Re: It sucks getting old!!!

After I cut back on my motorcycle racing, things got a lot better. Skip, maybe it's the bull riding?

I'm 50, once something gets sore, strained or broken, it stays that way a lot longer. Been crossfitting for a year and actually don't get hurt that much.

Jeff

How right you are-- I am 52 - and feel like I am 20. always loved working out-mostly as hobby- but recently got into heavy sandbag lifting- felt amazing- BUT if you look at the real damage we do to our bodies by lifting improperly etc etc- most of us have damage to our backs that we do not even realize- degeneration abounds in our spinal dscs- and guess what- with my recent heavy lifting at 52-- aftr all my years of health- BINGO- I hrniated a disc- there ain't no pain like that type of spam that your back goes through. So now in therapy- and just now 3 weeks later starting 2 feel a little better--BUT I willbe symptom FREE but the herniation NEVER heals- so my life just changed-so now I will only be doing light weights when I heal to that point- and much much more cardio- stationary bike and treadmill and push ups and chin ups- and maybe some lying on the floor(gravity free) dumbbell benches- so take heed all of us superman out there- there is a silent enemy waiting to attack- be afraid- be very afraid.......
