Re: Distal (sp?) Bicep Rupture!

I'm sorry to hear that, man. You definitely aren't the first one hear to deal with it. Check the threads below for more reference.

I ruptured my left distal bicep tendon May 14, 2009. Almost a year, now. Be prepared to take it easy for a while. I was cleared for all activity at 12 weeks. At that point the doctor said my muscle would be the limiting factor in what I could lift.

Of course, I started slowly and avoided all explosive lifting such as cleans, kipping pullups etc.

My advice is that as soon as the doc allows you to start doing 2 pound curls, do them. I was never in the habit of doing curls, and even when I started back to working out, I didn't do many. This was a mistake. My bicep is just now finally catching up, and is no longer really holding me back in pulling motions.

One of the other guys on the board directed me here: http://tendonsurgeryinfo.com/distalbiceps/ (WFS) Its got a lot of useful info.

Good luck!

Re: Distal (sp?) Bicep Rupture!

I'll second that opinion. I had that same injury and eased back into it with PT. Full recovery took b/w 6-12 mths as I recall, but it is as good as new. My other arm is the one that bothers me most of the time these days, not the one I had surgery on.

Re: Distal (sp?) Bicep Rupture!

Follow the PT is the best advice. For me, my surgeon did not recommend PT, and he really didn't even give me much advice on what I could do or not do, so I just had to stay on the conservative side.

Re: Distal (sp?) Bicep Rupture!

Ryan,

Thanks for the advice and encouragement. I checked the link you listed. The bottom of the page had some similar posts as well.

Justin,

I happened during Jiu-jitsu. Funny enough I did it to myself. I was teaching a lift and had my hand under the opponents thigh. I looked up to give instructions, popped my hips forward and POW. Thank goodness the students were in small groups and not in a giant setting with everyone looking. Basically I put some leverage on it and the force popped it. Great proof of what an armlock can do even if it wasn't intentional.

Surgery tomorrow. Wish me luck.
