Starting my wife on Crossfit

any suggestions on how to start my wife out on CF? She has not worked out regularly for months and at that time she was going to Curves. I don't want to discourage her or have her puke.

Re: Starting my wife on Crossfit

This is always tough. How old is your wife and does she have a strength training background ie: high school or college athlete etc. Also, how long have you been doing Crossfit, I would say your ability to scale the workouts is going to heavily depend on your experience in it. I introduced my mom to Crossfit and she is over fifty but has a healthy diet and exercises intermitently. I had her do 12-9-6 DB burpees with 5lbs (maybe to light) and lunges. The problem I found was that although she probably could have done more say 21-15-9 or 10lb dumbells, she was still sore for two days. Be careful of that and don't give your wife rhabdo

Re: Starting my wife on Crossfit

I was in the reverse situation. I had to get my boyfriend, Stefan, into it. I was convinced it was the way for me, but I need my #1 fan there to cheer me on. So I dragged him kicking and screaming to our affiliate. I told him he had to try it for a week. We went for 4 sessions. It took that week, and then he was hooked.

I took more of an approach of "give it a try". You can do anything for a week, right? I have a feeling, she'll notice progress even in the first week. You can go bigger and tell her to try it for 2 weeks or a month. The results speak for themselves!

Re: Starting my wife on Crossfit

Try this:

Day one:

Scaled Michael

Day two:

Scaled Angie (no pull-ups or some JPU's)

Day three:

Deadlift

Day four:

rest:

Day five:

Max airsquats

Day six:

One of the Girls (scaled)

Day seven:

Deadlift

Try that as the first week. You know your wife, you know what she can handle without crushing her. I've used this progression on a bunch of folks with good results; everyone comes back, no injuries, some stiffness and soreness but no major DOMS cases.

Best,

Steve

Re: Starting my wife on Crossfit

As someone who CrossFits with his wife, I recommend attending an affiliate. This is a much easier path for a lot of people than having one partner coach the other. Works for us.

Re: Starting my wife on Crossfit

It took a while for me to convince my wife but showing her the video's of the ladies doing the workouts and excelling at them better than most guys was very motivating for my wife so I started her with exercises and workouts that I knew she would like and when she got the hang of it I stopped catering to her and said 3-2-1- go!
