Why no gloves?

I have been Crossfitting for almost a year now and have used gloves every day. I don't understand why so many Crossfitters go barehanded and indulge themselves in blisters and ripping calluses. Is it just a movement towards the hardcore or is there something functional? I just use lightweight gloves to prevent calluses.

Shhh! You'll get kicked out of Crossfit for such talk!

All kidding aside, it has to do with the 'functional' aspect of Crossfit, and I am sure some of the bravado that comes with working so hard you tear your hands. Not to mention gloves adversely affect your grip.

Use chalk, trim your calluses and you will be fine.

Re: Why no gloves?

I'm curious to know this too, so if any of you find an old thread that goes over this, please let me know where I can find it. Non CFers often ask me why I don't wear gloves and "because I'm not a pansy" doesn't seem to register as a acceptable answer for them.

A friend of mine who I introduced to CF was wearing gloves to his beginner classes and one of our coaches made some convincing citations regarding why going with no gloves is superior. I don't remember what he said and couldn't do any justice to if I even tried to repeat them.

Re: Why no gloves?

I don't wear gloves because there was a time when they were not allowed for OL competition. They have since been allowed, but you still won't see any o-lifters competing with them. You also have a false sense of "grip" security with gloves on.

Re: Why no gloves?

I'm sure the reasons are for functionality.

I was told at my first class that if I wore gloves
I had to have a matching bag

Re: Why no gloves?

Putting down my gloves was the hardest thing joining CF.

I mean...they were like my babies.

I miss my pretty hands.

I don't give a rip what people think. I wear gloves for pullups and deadlifts. Functional means not having my wife say "take those rough nasty hands off my soft smooth body". It's worth it to me. To each his own.

I don't mind hubbies callouses - give me something to pick at.

When I climb I can't use gloves and my hands get really trashed. A little hand lotion takes care of the wife.
