Question Can't wait to get started!

I'm going to be starting CF in February - that's the earliest opening for orientation or I'd start sooner. I've been in touch with one of the owners/coaches and my orthopedic surgeon, but I thought I'd post here and see if anyone has had experience with this...

I am 54 and used [emphasis on used] to be very athletic. E.g., college b'ball, 20 mile hikes, 100 mile bike rides, etc. Then my knees quit on me and I gained about 40 pounds. I had arthroscopic surgery on one knee in September. Early on I saw some improvement, but it is now quite swollen and sore (again). The coach knows about this and the surgeon said, "Great" to doing CF, but with very light weights.

I'm concerned that this @$#% knee is going to interfere. If anyone has started CF with a bad knee and had success with scaling and modification (e.g., there is no way I can run right now), I'd love to hear from you. Thanks!

FYI - I'm starting a modified paleo on the first. Modified meaning that I'm not willing to cook separate meals for me v. the family so I may have some sugars in cooking, etc. Otherwise, no gluten and very limited dairy for sure. I'm hoping to see some improvement re inflammation...

Welcome to CF!

I think you should be fine if you start slow and low. I'd start right away with some of the bw wods scaled by brandx if I was you, but whatever.

A stricter paleo approach would probably help your knee, and get on the fish oil asap would be my recommendation. Losing weight will obviously help too.

Learn POSE technique for running. Search it.

Re: Can't wait to get started!

Looking forward to seeing you in Feb. Melissa.

If it helps any I've got iffy knees (thank you mtn biking and rock climbing) , a back I hurt years ago (carrying something and I went to put it down and turned the wrong way and went "oh crap ") and crappy shoulders.

Don't worry everything that we do from the warm up to strength training to the metcon can be scaled.

Re: Can't wait to get started!

Hey Melissa! I am 54 also - no knee issues, but some back issues.
I,too, was a bit tentative at first, but have learned from my trainer that almost anything can be modified, scaled or substituted. Hang in there, and enjoy yourself!

Re: Can't wait to get started!

Hi Mellissa and welcome!

I had an ACL operated on a few years back - and both of my ankles have been operated on (thank you skateboarding!!!!). It was years ago for me, and I was a pup when it happened, but I still get some soreness in my knees and ankles. I used to use ice packs after doing any activity, but as I have gotten stronger I find I dont require them that much...

Listen to what your body is telling you, dont feel the need to push through if it gets too painful - and ice feels great after a good workout!

Re: Can't wait to get started!

Thanks to everyone for the welcome and encouragement. I'll look into some of the recommendations and, yes, more strict paleo and weight loss [ -)] will definitely help! And, great to see someone from F'ton, too!
